mimbres bowls, esp. those from styles ii/iii in the classic period (1100-1130), are marked by black-on-white abstract geometric patterns.
these "death bowls" are commonly oriented upside-down, placed on heads of the deceased, with patterns only facing inwards. purposely cracked and pierced at their centers, they depict projected narratives and incomplete imagery. the puncture, an act of release, allows passage for both the artisan and the buried.
